CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy is a safe, gentle, and effective manual therapy that works by facilitating the body’s own natural healing powers to remove or lessen the negative effects of stress on the central nervous system. It works by treating a physiological system known as the craniosacral system, which houses and protects the CNS - the brain and spinal cord, as well as keeping it working smoothly. The craniosacral system is made up of the protective membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and the bones to which the membranes attach, all the way from your head (cranium) to your tail (sacrum). Hence, CranioSacral Therapy.

How can it help me?
CranioSacral Therapy can help in many ways: it can help improve overall health and vitality, help increase your resistance to disease, as well as help with many aches, pains, disorders, and diseases. In fact, since the role of the CNS is so important, any imbalance or disturbance in proper function could lead to sensory, motor, and/or neurological disabilities. Some examples include headaches/migraines, chronic neck or back pain, sciatica, learning disabilities, insomnia, dizziness/vertigo, tinnitus, even colic—and those are just a few of the conditions CranioSacral Therapy can help.

How many sessions will I need for my body’s problem?
Since CranioSacral Therapy facilitates the body’s own natural healing abilities, the number of sessions needed will vary from individual to individual as well as from complaint to complaint. Each situation and response to therapy is unique. Sometimes, only one session is needed. Other times, several sessions per week over the course of several weeks may be necessary.

I didn’t feel much, why not?
CranioSacral Therapy is a very gentle, non-invasive, and passive type of treatment. The therapist applies very light forces and blends with the patient’s tissues; it is so subtle, it is almost imperceptible at times. Please remember, the more passive the therapy, the more active the patient in his/her own healing response and trust that the positive effects of the session will come - it may take up to 48 hours to become noticeable, and that changes may continue for even up to 2 weeks. I like to use the analogy of watching your plant that sits in the south-facing window – the leaves will follow the sun from east to west – yes, they actually move, but if you stare at the plant all day you’ll never see the movement. Leave in the morning and the leaves are facing east; return in the evening and, sure enough, they are facing west. Subtle, gentle, yet highly effective and efficient. So is CranioSacral Therapy.

Why do I feel pain in my body when I didn’t feel it at the beginning of the session?
Since CranioSacral Therapy facilitates self-healing, sometimes the body needs to make changes away from what you perceive to be the primary injury site. The body adapts and compensates for all injury and dysfunction, and it does its best to prevent you from feeling pain and other symptoms. You only feel the pain when its options have run out. Many tissue changes could have occurred without you ever being aware of it. After a session, some tissues may have to lengthen; others may have to shorten. Your body will do its best to keep you comfortable, but sometimes tissue changes during the healing process do get noticed in areas you didn’t even realize were involved. The body is truly amazing, its innate intelligence remarkable. Please trust that it knows best and be gentle with yourself for at least 48 hours after each session.

Who can chiropractic help?
Improved nerve communications between your brain and your body can help everyone. So, if you have subluxations, you could be a good candidate for chiropractic care. Modified adjusting approaches can help children, the elderly or those with special needs.

How long will the treatments last?
Since chiropractic care depends on the healing abilities of each patient, results can vary from patient to patient. Everyone responds differently. Some detect changes in a few short days or weeks. Others may take weeks to months before showing progress.

Will I have to go for the rest of my life?
Like your chiropractic doctor, some patients opt to continue with some type of regular chiropractic checkups. These patients show up for their visits feeling great. Their interest in wellness and prevention helps make sure that once they get well, they stay well.
